Built for the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is a world class sport and recreation facility offering “extensive programming that serves recreational and community groups, high performance athletes, as well as fitness centre clientele.”1

Among the amenities is the 50 metre, 10 lane training pool where most of the community and fitness swimming takes place. To enhance the pool action and offer sponsor messaging opportunities the facility decided to add a new video display system beside the existing swim scoreboard.

Jason McNeill, OES Scoreboards Sales Representative, worked with the facility to ensure the OES video solution proposed would perform well in an aquatic atmosphere. “Knowing it would be mounted in a swimming area meant we
had to consider environmental elements not usually found indoors,” he said. “To ensure high quality performance and longevity of the video display, we looked at different options to withstand the humidity, moisture and chlorine in the air as well as being splashed by pool water.”

Made to withstand the elements
The team at OES knew the pool setting would potentially shorten the lifespan of any indoor video board and opted for an outdoor solution for this project. The tightly sealed modules, potted LEDs modules and conformal coated circuit boards
of an outdoor OES video board meant the environment wouldn’t impact its components, performance or durability.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve opted for an outdoor solution indoors.” said Dave Verhoeven, OES Scoreboards
Technology Manager. “Some older arenas, for example, where condensation isn’t properly controlled have similar moist air and high humidity challenges. Since our outdoor video boards are designed to withstand whatever the weather throws at it, installing one in this pool area made sense.

Everything is completely sealed from outside elements.” From adjusting the brightness to an appropriate indoor level, to customizing the dimensions to match the height of the scoreboard next to it the OES videoboard has been designed to endure and create a fantastic viewing experience for patrons of the sports centre.
